What is Video Resolution

What is Video Resolution?  Resolution is defined as how many individual dots (pixles) are arranged horizontally and vertically on a screen or image. Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image. More pixels mean better quality. A standard definition video stream uses 640 x 480 pixels, while high definition uses 1920 x 1080 pixels. if you zoom in the picture, you can see there are actually thousands of individual dots making up the image. Each dot represents one pixel.

What is a Pixel?

A pixel is the smallest component of an image. Pixels make up the visible part of an image. They are like little dots of color. A single pixel contains three colors – red, green, blue – called RGB. When pixel come together, it’s become resolution, and resolution become an image.

When you look at an image on a computer screen, it appears very detailed because each dot of color is individually controlled by the computer. But when you print out the same image, each individual dot becomes one big dot. This is why the printed version looks less detailed.

The term “pixel” comes from early days of computers. In those days, there were no monitors; everything had to be displayed on paper. So the people working on the technology needed a way to describe how many dots could fit onto a piece of paper. So a pixel became a tiny dot of ink. And since a pixel is really just a dot, we call it a “dot.”

What is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio is a figure used to describe the relationship between the width and the height of a digital image. This number defines whether the picture is wider than tall, taller than wide. Most people are familiar with the standard 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio, which is what you see on TV screens, computers, tablets, phones, etc. 4:3 ratio refers to a picture that is four units high and three units wide; whereas a 16:9 ratio refers to a picture 16 units high and nine units wide.

Aspect ratio is a figure used to describe the relationship between the width and the height of a digital image.

Progressive vs Interlaced

The terms Progressive and Interlaced are often confused. They describe how different types of video are captured. In the case of Digital Video Recorders (DVR), we capture video in either one of the following ways:

Interlaced –Interlaced video is a standard that was established before the advent of digital video content, which developed over 70 years ago, primarily for television video formats like NTSC and PAL. Video with the letter i are called interlaced. such as 480i or 1080i. Interlaced video displays even and odd scan lines as separate fields. The even scan lines are drawn on the screen, then the odd scan lines are drawn on the screen. Two of these even and odd scan line fields make up one video frame.

Progressive scan videos display both the even and odd lines (the entire frame) at the same moment on the television screen without being divided into 2 parts. Video resolution with letter p indicate progressive scan signals. such as 720p, 1080p or 2160p. Progressive scanning displays each horizontal line of pixels twice, once during each half cycle. This allows for smoother motion and better detail retention. In addition, it reduces flicker and provides sharper edges.

Interlaced - Each frame is split into 2 parts: even and odd.
Progressive - Every frame is displayed fully without being divided into 2 parts.

So what does this mean for us? If you’re watching TV, you’ve probably seen some interlaced video. You might notice that there are vertical lines running across the screen. These are called “scan lines”. When the image is scanned vertically, each line represents a single pixel. So every line contains information about a single dot on the screen. But when the image is shown progressively, each line holds information about half a dot.

This is why interlaced video looks jagged. There is no way to show the entire picture at once, so the dots are broken up into separate lines. On a computer, the same thing happens. We don’t really see the individual pixels because our monitors do a good job of smoothing out the jaggies.

But progressive video isn’t perfect either. Because the full picture is always visible, the dots aren’t quite as smooth. And since we can’t tell exactly where the dots are located, we have to interpolate between the dots to fill in the gaps. 

Different Types of Video Resolutions

Every new type of video resolution appears sharper and clearer than its predecessor. This article looks into each of the four major types of video resolutions and explains what they mean.

We sometimes use the term “resolution” when referring to different screen sizes instead of using the actual dimensions of the screen. The different types of video resolutions are:

SD (Standard Definition) Resolution

SD resolution is standard quality resolution. A pixel height of 480 pixels is usually referred to as a “standard” screen size. the frame is more detailed than a 360p, 240 p, or 144p video, but less detailed than a 720 p or 1080 p video. the SD resolution are more popular for the video in poor network conditions. For social media output, you’ll often see SD used because it’s faster to load and playback on smartphones and tablets. However, SD will usually look too small and low quality on computers.

The most popular standard video resolutions include:

  • 640 x 360 (or 360p)
  • 640 x 480 (or 480p)

HD Video-720P

720p is the lowest HD video resolution. High Definition Video (HD) refers to digital video files that use resolutions of 1280×720 or greater. This format uses a progressive scan method to display images. The term “high definition,” however, does not refer to the quality of HD videos. Rather, it indicates the level of image clarity. For example, standard definition video contains 640×480 pixels, while 720p has 1280×720 pixels. Both formats provide crisp, clear pictures. However, HD offers much clearer picture quality.

Full HD Resolution – 1080P

Full HD videos usually have a resolution of: 1920 x 1080 (or 1080p), which often referred to as ‘Full HD’ or ‘1080p’, this is the most commonly used format for high definition video. You’ll find it on most TVs, computer monitors, Blu-ray players, game consoles, digital cameras, camcorders, mobile phones, tablets, and even some web browsers.

Full HD videos usually have a resolution of: 1920 x 1080 (or 1080p)

QHD (Quad High Definition) and 2K Resolution

QHD and 2K are both popular resolutions used in mobile devices. A quad-HD display offers four times the pixels of standard HD screens, while a 2K display contains twice the number of pixels compared to HD. Both offer crisp images and large viewing areas. However, it’s important to understand what each resolution actually represents.

QHD and 2k video files have a resolution of: QHD: 2560 × 1440 (1440p)

2K: 1920 × 1080 (1080p)

QHD (quad high definition) is a newer standard for video display resolutions. This format offers four times the number of pixels as Full HD (1080p), and twice the number of pixels as HD (720p). As such, it allows for much sharper images with less pixelation.

2K (twenty-four hundred) is a newer standard that doubles the number of pixels over 1080p. Therefore, it allows for smoother motion and crisper detail. Most televisions are now capable of displaying both QHD and 2K formats, though some models may require additional equipment to support either one.

4K resolution (ultra HD)

Technically speaking, 4K video is a resolution of four times the number of pixels used in 1080p Full HD video. But there are different types of 4K videos, including Ultra High Definition (UHD), Super Hi-Vision (SHV), and even 8K video. Most people think that 4K refers to the size of the screen, but actually 4K refers to the amount of data required to store the image.

The most common type of 4K video is UHD, which stands for Ultra High Definition. This is the highest quality standard currently available and is capable of displaying images with up to 7680×4320 pixels.

4K videos have a resolution of:

  • 3840 x 2160 (or 2160p)

8K Video

The next thing to know about 8K is that it’s actually pretty rare to see it come out of camera. Most cameras still produce images at 5120 x 2880 (4K). And even though some professional cameras offer options to go up to 7680 x 4320, most people aren’t really shooting those resolutions. Instead, we usually see things like 50 megapixels, 60 megapixels, 70 megapixels, etc.

But there are times when you do need to shoot in 8K, especially if you’re working with very large files. For example, if you’re doing a lot of work with drone photography, you might want to start thinking about shooting in 8K. Or maybe you just want to make sure you capture every single detail of your subject. Whatever the reason, here’s everything you need to know about 8K.
