What is Miracast? Miracast is one of many wireless screens mirroring standards. Before diving into what Miracast is, it is essential to understand precisely the screen mirroring standard. Instead of using an HDMI cable for video transmission, screen mirroring refers to replicating the screen of a smartphone, computer, or tablet screen wirelessly onto a TV screen. It can also be known as screen sharing.

History of Miracast

Miracast was first developed in 2010 by Sony and Samsung as an alternative to DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards for sharing media between devices. It has since been adopted by many manufacturers across different platforms, such as Android 4 or later versions (including Windows Phone 8/10), iOS 6 or later versions (including iPad 2 or newer), and TVs using HDMI outputs from any manufacturer who supports Miracast.

Miracast was developed and launched by Wi-Fi Alliance at the end of 2012.

The Miracast Alliance, which includes Microsoft, Samsung, LG Electronics, Sony, Toshiba, Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, Nokia, Wiko, Panasonic, Fujitsu, and others, announced the Miracast 2.0 specification in January 2017.

The Miracast 2.1 specification was published in June 2018 and added support for Bluetooth Low Energy.

The new version of Miracast focus on high-definition content and increased performance for Miracast devices.

What is Miracast?

Miracast is a wireless display technology that allows you to stream video from your smartphone, tablet, Laptop, game consoles, set-top boxes, etc., to display via Wi-Fi. You’ll likely see Miracast used more often in the future because it makes connecting devices easier.

Miracast is a screen mirroring standard for wireless connections among Wi-Fi-certified Miracast devices. The pictures or videos from sending devices (such as smartphones, computers, or tablets) wirelessly to display receivers (such as monitors, TVs, or projectors) without cables and a Wireless router.

The Miracast technology uses Wi-Fi Direct. Miracast is a wireless connection that allows devices to communicate with each other without using an internet connection or router. The only thing necessary is establishing a wireless connection between two devices using this standard protocol.

Miracast is based on the peer-to-peer Wi-Fi Direct standard. It allows sending up to 1080p HD video (H.264 codec) and 5.1 surround sound (AAC and AC3 are optional codecs, mandated codec is linear pulse-code modulation – 16 bits 48 kHz 2 channels).[6] The connection is created via WPS and therefore is secured with WPA2. IPv4 is used on the Internet layer. On the transport layer, TCP or UDP are used. On the application layer, the stream is initiated and controlled via RTSP, RTP for the data transfer.

Because it’s based on Wi-Fi direct, Mircast can also be used for wireless display (WPD). WPD allows you to stream your computer screen onto any device with an HDMI port—like an Android phone or tablet—and then mirror what you see there onto whatever TV or monitor you’re using at the moment (or even multiple ones).

The different names of miracast

Miracast is built-in for many Android phones, Windows 8 laptops, tablets, and the Amazon Fire TV stick. You can get a Miracast adapter that plugs into any HDMI port to allow it to act as a receiver too. Different original design manufacturers may have other names for Miracast. Miracast is also known as wireless display, wireless mirroring and screen mirroring, sharecast, allshare. You can find this function on the setting of your android or windows devices.

How Miracast Works?

Wi-Fi Direct is a standard for connecting devices over a local network (LAN). It enables you to connect two or more Wi-Fi-enabled devices using a direct connection without requiring an access point or router.

Miracast creates a direct wireless connection between the device and the external display. It doesn’t require your Wi-Fi router. It works similarly to an ad hoc network.

If two devices connect directly, one device acts as the source device (transmitter device) and another as a sink device (receiver device). Miracast works by using Wi-Fi Direct, allowing two devices to communicate directly.

A wireless connection is established between the two devices when sending content from a mobile device to a compatible television through the Miracast feature.

How does Miracast protect content?

Miracast uses HDCP digital content protection technology to protect premium content from unauthorized copying. HDCP is a content protection mechanism used by digital video equipment manufacturers to prevent unauthorized copying of high-definition television programs. This element secures the digital rights of content creators and encourages them to share their content online.

Compatible devices and OS support Miracast

Computers running Windows 8 and phones running Windows 10 Mobile can stream to Miracasts devices.

Android device running Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) or later.

The new Roku 3 and Roku Streaming stick are Miracast compatible.

Microsoft Wireless Dis­play Adapter.

Amazon’s Fire TV now supports Miracast, and its new Fire TV Stick comes preloaded with screen-mirroring protocol

Other Miracast-certified devices also support Miracast function, such as Miracast dongles.

Miracast Doesn’t Work With Apple Devices.

How to use Miracast?

It requires Miracast-certificated devices and a Miracast-certificated receiver dongle plugged into your big screen TV or projector.

Connect the Miracast adapter to your TV. Most adapters take less than 10 seconds to boot up, but some may take longer. Once connected, your TV will ask you to select an input source; please select the correct HDMI source.

Open the settings menu of your smartphone, tablet, or Laptop, and select display.

Tap Wireless Display (Miracast is also called Wireless display, wireless mirroring and screen mirroring, sharecast, Allshare, you may find different names on the setting of your Android).

The devices will search for nearby Miracast-enabled devices. After one moment, the name of the Miracast adapter should appear.

Select the SSID of your Miracast adapter. Your smart devices will pair and connect to the adapter automatically, and the screen from your smart devices will mirror to the display.

Miracast vs Chromecast vs AirPlay

AirPlay is Apple’s proprietary protocol that connects iPhone, iPod, and iPad devices to Apple TVs and speakers via Wi-Fi networks. Apple provides an app called AirPlay for iOS devices. That allows Macs, iPhones, iPad, and iPod touch devices to connect to televisions wirelessly rather than via cables.

Chromecast or called Google Cast

A Google proprietary protocol allows Android phones and tablets to send audio and video streams to Chromecast dongles and speakers. Google Cast is another tool from Google that will enable consumers to stream media wirelessly to their TV sets.


Miracast is a technology that enables devices with a Miracast receiver to display images from a device with an HDMI transmitter. It is based on Wi-Fi Direct, which allows devices such as smartphones and tablets to connect wirelessly using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. With this technology, users can mirror what’s happening on their phone screen onto any TV set with an HDMI input port.
